Wine a So So... (The People Made my Evening!)
So, yes...this pic was taken at the opening of the L Wine Bar at 1801...much like at an amusement park, or like when children go and see Santa at the mall...and guests in attendance were given prints as souvenirs. I am surprised the people at the L didn't put the pics in a little keyhole photo keychain... now, THAT's an idea!... Or maybe have a wine bottle cutout that one can put their face and arms through?? No?
Anyway, I had a great time at the L... it was fun to see Garrett, Ann & Jennifer again, and to finally meet Sac-Eats & Mrs. Sac-Eats in person.
The interior of the wine bar is nice, has a retro feel...liked the bathrooms. Did not like the tv at the bar, but...this is the trend of the Sac restaurant. An obnoxious tv is a must. To escape the tube, one can sit upstairs, or venture out on the patio. Pretty classy up there.
The white wine: not sure what varietal it was (I had already had a glass of red, so maybe that is why I could not tell. It looked to be a pinot grigio??) It was too sweet for me (as I am a red drinker), but paired beautifully with the macadamia nut appetizer. The appetizer tasted similar to a pecan diamond. The white wine with the macadamia bar was definitely a highlight!
Asparagus mint crostini...
It was OK, but too risky in my book. Asparagus does not pair well with wine!! Why would you serve something like this at a soft opening of a wine bar? Just curious...
Another appetizer we had was a bacon on crostini item...
now you see it...
We also had a forgettable lavender croquette. We'll sock that in the laundry drawer for freshness. ;)
Maybe I am being a little harsh. I had a great time and service was pretty great, too, but food (barbie food) was not passed until 8 or so... a full hour after we arrived. And the food pictured above was all that was passed. We were also served a shiraz (70%) & cabernet (30%) blend. Not one of the better wines I have ever had. Oh well...
So... onward we (staggered) went to Zocalo's! (for a little seis de mayo fun...)
Here are some of the dishes we enjoyed...
I tried to take a snap of Sac-eats salad, (which was quite possibly the best looking dish in my opinion), but it was too blurry to post.
All in all, an enjoyable evening amongst friends.
Salute!

It was so nice meeting you last night, especially since you're a fellow Armstrong & Getty girl, editor/art director, and fan of the buttercream!
Cheers!

Great review. Sounds like it was alot of fun.
How fun!
Oooh, can I use some of those pictures for a min-Zocalo review? None of mine came out for crap...
Garrett,
Of course you can! I think there are a few on Sacatomato you might want to borrow, too. :)
