I started eating sushi about three or four years ago. Of course, it's only just now becoming popular in the midwest, and there were only two restaurants I would go to when I moved back to Dayton last year. I have to say that one of the best luxuries ever was splitting a boat on my 28th birthday. But, the best sushi I ever had was in Honolulu, Hawaii at a restaurant called Sansei. Why all the sushi talk? Well, because I am excited that I get to go to the Sushi Masters Competition on the 18th!! YAY!

What does everyone like? My favorite has to be ahi tuna or yellowtail. There's a great roll at Miyagi Sushi on Fair Oaks without rice that I just love. I get the sauce on the side because I don't see the point of marinating it like every roll seems to be at Mikuni. Gag. I like the sauce to be more of an afterthought/dipping sort of thing.

It seems like we have been inundated with new sushi restaurants lately... I have avoided Taro and Tamaya, but I am going to try Taki at some point. I did really like Taka, so I will be a patron of the midtown location (when it opens). I am still really sad that Sakurabana closed, I have some really happy memories dining there. I thought that it was one of the most romantic places to eat in Sac. Am I crazy? :)

What do they mean when they say they are battling it out for a $5,000 purse? Is purse a word for prize...or are all these sushi guys battling it out for some fancy kate spade/prada handbag?

Yes...that's a betting term. Purse means the collected money.
But, a sushi purse would be cool looking... Like the purse part would be one "piece" of a roll and the sides would have a spiral design. I think it would be also be cool if it were beaded...the zipper pull could be a mini gyoza... I would have my soy sauce perfume in it and my wasabi lip balm. Mmmm, umami...

Yeah, it was probably a month or so ago. The owners moved back to Japan I think. At least you guys still have Zen Toro, our location closed and is becoming a Taka.
