Miracle Fruit

I have heard a lot of talk lately about an African berry, called “miracle fruit,” which contains a protein that causes the taste buds to temporarily (for about an hour) sense sour as sweet.

This means that after eating the berry, lemon juice tastes like lemonade, and a slice of bread might taste like cake.

It might be fun to get some of these for the next Potluck. There is a supplier in Miami, Florida, but I am hearing that the price is currently $1.80 per bean plus shipping.

Are you coming to the Sac Food Group potluck? All the food bloggers are welcome, of course.

Where did you hear about these berries?

I didn't know I was invited. I will come if I am around, thanks!

I heard about the berries on a podcast and also on NPR. Pretty cool, huh? :)

Anyone can come. They just have to respond (RSVP) at the forums and bring a dish.

Hey Cakegrrl, great website! My wife showed me your blog... I have some miracle fruit plants here in Sacto. I had 3 plants that died from abuse - I left them out too deep into the cold season and died in 2005. http://photos.yahoo.com/sukidoggie But, I have two new plants that are about 8 inches tall and may fruit next year. You're welcome to try some if I can get it to fruit next year. Search on synsepalum dulcificum. Gimme an email sometime if you're interested. suki doggie at yahoo (squish it together and add a dotcom for the email address). Keep up the great blogs!
